Chapter One
############-
Lucy sat at the foot of her parents' bed, her knees tucked under her dimpled chin, she smiled a big smile at her father, who was passing her a large red sack, which was up to bursting point with gifts. "Merry Christmas Lucy," her parents smiled. Lucy tugged at the rope which lined the inside of the sack, and five presents dropped onto the bed. The best part of being an only child was the fact you got millions of gifts, without having to share! But Lucy knew this was her last Christmas as an only child, for her mother was having a baby three days after boxing day! Lucy spent the next hour ripping open gifts, and gasping at each wonderful gift in turn. "I'm sorry there's not as much as last year," said Mum, "you see, I wanted to give the baby a few gifts as well." She tucked the duvet under her large pregnant bump. Lucy snuggled up in between her two parents, and sighed. "Mummy, Daddy will you still love me when the baby comes?" she asked. Mum laughed, Dad chuckled. "Of course, we could never forget our big baby, could we Daddy?" Mum smiled, turning towards her husband. Lucy smiled, as her father ruffled her straw coloured hair, even though she has carefully brushed it nicely that morning.
The morning was brilliant, Mum cooked a roast dinner, with a turkey, roast potatoes, chipolate's, and yorkshire puddings. "Are you sure you don't want anymore darling?" Mum asked Lucy, as she finished her last roast potatoe. "I couldn't eat a sausage!" laughed Lucy, rubbing her tummy. "Well, I guess we better start getting you ready for the party!" smiled Mum. She put Lucy's plate in the dishwasher, and led the way into the hallway. Lucy followed her mother into the hallway, and went into Lucy's bedroom. Lucy got dressed in her special velvet wiloet party dress and her new lacey tights, and brushed her hair. Then she went downstairs, and played with her father, who was wearing a smart suit. When Mum was ready, they went all the way to the party in Oakville....were a terrible thing happened.....
Chapter Two
############
"Lucy, you're all grown up!" smiled Uncle David, twirling Lucy in the air. Lucy giggled, and fell on the ground. Lucy's cousin Jake ran into the garden, and asked Lucy if she would like to play dominoes. In the end, Lucy decided to play with her other cousin, Polly. Lucy and Polly played happily in the garden, and it was only when the buffet was served that the terrible thing happened...
Lucy sat next to her mother, and didn't notice, when her mother began sqiurming in her seat. But then her face turned purple, sweat ran down her forehead, and her tummy began to wobble. "Melissa!" said Dad worriedly. The whole family crowded around Mum, and someone called an ambulance. Lucy was just as worried as her father, and when Uncle David and Dad carried her mother into the ambulance, she felt like crying. She ran into the toilet, and cried for half an hour, hoping this was just a dream. That night, Lucy shared a bed with Polly, and couldn't sleep. "Mummy..." she kept muttering in her sleep. In the morning Dad took her home. Without saying a word. That night Mum came home, her bump was gone, and her face was pale and sweaty. Lucy smiled, but there was no little bundle in her mothers arms. "Mummy," said Lucy softly, running over to her mother. "Lucy," said Mum, her voice quivering. "The baby is dead!"
Chapter Three
##############
The next week was horrible. Mum kept crying, and Dad wouldn't play. Lucy has the most awful Christmas ever. She tried playing with her toys, but it was not the same without the watchful eye of her mother.
One day, Lucy crept over to her mum, and hugged her. To her suprise, her mother returned the gesture, and tried her hardest all week to make Lucy's Christmas enjoyable. But she failed, Lucy was still concerned for her mother, and after realizing that Mum's baby died, she felt terrible. She also felt sad she had longed for a baby brother or sister for ages, and now her dream had vanished, in what seemed like a poof of smoke. Lucy didn't want to play with her toys anymore, and things were never the same again... |
