Heather O'Reilly, a forward from East Brunswick, N.J., scored 136 goals and had 46 assists for the East Brunswick High Lady Bears during her high school career. She also was named this year's Girls State Player of the Year in New Jersey. "Heather is the fastest soccer player I have ever seen," says her high school coach, Lou Kosa. "She has three speeds: fast, fast and faster."
Heather has been named Player of the Year on PARADE's 11th annual All-America High School Girls Soccer Team. There are 34 other athletes on this year's team, from 15 states. California leads, with 11 players. To be eligible for the team##-which is selected by coaches, scouts and recruiters nationwide##-a girl must play for her high school team or a soccer club or team.
As a member of the Under-19 Women's National Team, Heather scored four goals and had a team-high seven assists at the first-ever Under-19 Women's World Championship in Canada last summer. The U.S. won the tournament, beating Canada 1-0 in the title game. So far, Heather has scored 21 goals and had 13 assists in 18 games with the team.
Heather also was called up last year to play for the Women's National Team. In 16 international matches, she scored two goals. Her first came against Italy at the 2002 Nike U.S. Women's Cup championship game, where her team won
4-0. The second came in a 3-1 win against Norway at the Four Nations Tournament in China.
"Heather has a great work ethic," said the Women's National Team head coach, April Heinrichs. "She is one of the fittest and fastest players on our team."
"I am lucky," says Heather. "I got my speed from my dad, who was a sprinter at Villanova, and my love of sports from my three older brothers."
Heather will attend North Carolina this fall and play for its women's team, a collegiate powerhouse. But with the World Cup happening Sept. 23-Oct. 11, expect to see Heather##-along with several former PARADE All-Americans##-considered for the team.

The Best Of The Best
Defender Can't Be Beat
The country's top defender among the girls this year is Rachel Buehler of Del Mar, Calif. Rachel, who also was on last year's PARADE team, was the heart of the defense for the champion U.S. Under-19 team. "Rachel is only 17, but at the Under-19 World Championships, she proved she is one of the best defenders in the world," says the Under-19 coach, Tracey Leone. "No one can beat her on the ground or in the air." Rachel will play for Stanford this fall.
Midfielder Plays Vital Role
Angela Woznuk of El Cajon, Calif., is this year's top midfielder. In her first appearance with the Under-19 team in March 2002, Angela scored two goals in a 5-1 win against a pro team, the San Jose CyberRays of the Women's United Soccer Association, in a preseason game. "Angie is a technically clean player and a great playmaker," says Coach Tracey Leone. "She played a vital role in helping us to win the Under-19 Women's World Championship." Angela will play for the University of Portland this fall.
Three Times Is A Charm
Our top goalkeeper for the third year in a row is Ashlyn Harris of Satellite Beach, Fla. As the starting goalkeeper for the Under-19 team, this junior helped the U.S. win the 2002 World Championship, giving up only two goals over six games. Ashlyn also has helped her high school team win the state championship the last two years, and she was named Florida Player of the Year for 2002. Ashlyn played on boys soccer teams until she was 14 and still practices with her high school's boys team, as well as the local men's club team.
