POETRY OF THE WEEK
" FOR REAL "
BY: Ashley Winkle
Age: 14
You are my hero,
My saint,
My god,
And even my angel.
You gave birth to me and gave me life,
You took care of me when I needed you.
And when I thought something couldn’t be done, you proved me wrong,
And I love you for that.
Through bad times and good, through thick and thin,
You pointed me in the right direction again and again.
From cup cakes to heart breaks,
You have always been there.
You are my hero,
My saint,
My god,
My angel.
You are…
… my mom

TALENT OF THE WEEK
Totally Tori
Age: 10, Southern, California -U.S., ) Tori was on Star Search in the Semi-Finals this year.
On the show the 10 year old was known as Victoria Kelly. She would like people to know her how
her close friends and family do and that's Tori.
Tori has been singing since the day she could talk. Her father is a studio singer and it was
very evident that Tori had inherited that same talent.
Tori had a desire at a very young age to sing like Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Rachael
Lampa. Her dad taught her how to gain control of her voice and utilize her perfect pitch.
When Tori was 7 years old she entered her first competition and won first place. Every
competition she entered, Tori raised the bar for herself and chose a more difficult song
to sing.
Tori began taking lessons with the famous Billy Purnell in September of 2002. On February 5th,
Tori auditioned for Star Search producers and made the show. Tori has since been on local
radio to perform and has sung at various events around Southern California. She sang the
National Anthem for the Lake Elsinore Storm baseball team on July 4th and most recently at
the World Champion Anaheim Angels. She has achieved so much at 10 years old.

Sight
the Fire
the Weapon
the Soul
-------------------------------------------------------
Question 2:
Next stop is the court of the king Iabates. It was here that the hero Bellerophon got one of his hardest assignments, which of course, he took care of. Riding the winged Pegasus, he rid the world of another terrifying monster. What was it?
the Medusa
the Chimera
the Hydra
the Cerberus
-------------------------------------------------------
Question 3:
Not all Greek heroes are known for their killings and slayings. For example, Daeadalus was a mythical architect and sculptor and his story is as great as the others'. Which was his masterpiece?
The Labyrinth of Crete
The Colossus of Rhodes
The Palace of Knossos
The Acropolis of Athens
-------------------------------------------------------
Question 4:
As with most of the brave Greek heroes, Theseus had to prove his might in a superhuman challenge. His destiny carried him to Daedalus' construction (the one you referred to in the previous question), where he had to face a deadly foe. Who or what was this?
Daedalus himself
Ariadne
Icarus
the Minotaur
-------------------------------------------------------
Question 5:
Although twelve would be the proper number of questions for this hero he would limit himself just to one (to be fair to the other heroes). As you may have guessed I'm talking about Herakles and I won't ask you anything about the slaying of the Nemeean Lion,or the capturing of the Bull of Crete, or the fight against the Amazones, or... . In fact the deeds of this hero were so many that he was even involved in freeing one of the heroes mentioned in the first four questions. Which one of them was saved by Herakles?
Daedalus
Bellerophon
Prometheus
he didn't save any of them
-------------------------------------------------------
Question 6:
The son of Zeus and Danae, Perseus was meant for great deeds. What is his name most memorably linked with?
the slaying of the Hydra
the quest for the Golden Fleece
the Trojan War
the killing of the Medusa
-------------------------------------------------------
Question 7:
Another fascinating adventure from Greek Mythology is the quest for the Golden Fleece. This expedition brought together some of the greatest heroes: Herakles, Theseus, Orpheus, Meleagros, Castor and Pollux and many others which all became known as the Argonauts, from the name of their ship - Argo. Led by Iason, the Argonauts landed in a legendary country from where they retrieved the artifact. What was the name of this land?
Ithaca
Lerna
Hesperides Garden
Colchis
-------------------------------------------------------
Question 8:
Probably the best written part of all Greek Mythology is the Trojan cycle, or in other words, the Iliad. The most skillful of all the warriors in the greek camp was Achilles. Being plunged in the river Styx when he was born, he became invulnerable except for one part of his body:
the neck
an elbow
a shoulder
a heel
-------------------------------------------------------
Question 9:
Tied to the Illiad comes the Odyssey. This cycle gets its name from the Greek hero Odysseus or Ulysses whose idea (the Trojan Horse) won the Trojan War. But still, his adventures were far from over. On his returning home to his lovely Penelope, he got caught in a series of incidents which delayed his arrival for many years. Which of these episodes are not part of Ulysses' story?
blinding the Cyclops Polyphemus
crossing through Scylla and Charybdis
being tempted by the sirens
crossing the Inferno
-------------------------------------------------------
Question 10:
This hero solved the riddle of the Sphinx.
the Minotaur
Aeetes
Argo
Oedipus

ANSWERS
Music Trivia
Question 1:
Although not a mortal, the titan Prometheus is considered to be a hero, for the precious gift he had brought to mankind. What was this gift, for which he would later pay dearly?
the Fire
Prometheus stole the secret of fire and taught it to humans, thus attracting the anger of Zeus. The mighty god ordered that Prometheus should be tied to a rock, on the top of the Caucasian Mountains, where he would lie in agonizing pain, as each day, a vulture would come and tear out his liver.
-------------------------------------------------------
Question 2:
Next stop is the court of the king Iabates. It was here that the hero Bellerophon got one of his hardest assignments, which of course, he took care of. Riding the winged Pegasus, he rid the world of another terrifying monster. What was it?
the Chimera
The Chimera was a three-headed creature, part lion, part goat and part serpent but it was no match for Bellerophon's arrows.
-------------------------------------------------------
Question 3:
Not all Greek heroes are known for their killings and slayings. For example, Daeadalus was a mythical architect and sculptor and his story is as great as the others'. Which was his masterpiece?
The Labyrinth of Crete
Hope you didn't mix mythology with history. The Labyrinth turned out to be bad luck for Daedalus and his son Icarus when king Minos imprisoned them in the construction they have built. They found a way to escape, by building artificial wings which carried them out of the Labyrinth. While Daedalus landed safely, his son, eager to fly higher and higher, finally broke his wings and felt from the skies.
-------------------------------------------------------
Question 4:
As with most of the brave Greek heroes, Theseus had to prove his might in a superhuman challenge. His destiny carried him to Daedalus' construction (the one you referred to in the previous question), where he had to face a deadly foe. Who or what was this?
the Minotaur
Hope you didn't mix mythology with history. Ariadne, the daughter of king Minos felt in love with Theseus and with her help he managed to kill the bloody Minotaur.
Prometheus
In one of his journeys Herakles reached the Caucasian Mountains, where Prometheus was imprisoned. He killed the hungry vulture that came every day to feed from Prometeus' body and set him free.
-------------------------------------------------------
Question 6:
The son of Zeus and Danae, Perseus was meant for great deeds. What is his name most memorably linked with?
the killing of the Medusa
One of the three Gorgons, Medusa was metamorphosed by the goddess Athena into a hideous creature which turned anyone who would look at her into stone. It was again Athena, who helped Perseus to kill Medusa, by giving him a mirror-shield so that he wouldn't be affected by her deadly appearance.
Colchis
The land of Colchis is in fact a real territory situated in modern Georgia. Like many other geographical places that were barely known to the ancient Greeks, Colchis was turned into a land of myth ruled by king Aeetes (the father of the sorceress Medea).
-------------------------------------------------------
Question 8:
Probably the best written part of all Greek Mythology is the Trojan cycle, or in other words, the Iliad. The most skillful of all the warriors in the greek camp was Achilles. Being plunged in the river Styx when he was born, he became invulnerable except for one part of his body:
a heel
Achilles fought bravely in the Trojan War after his best friend Patrocles was killed. He avenged the death of his friend by killing Hector, the hero of the Trojans. Achilles' vulnerable heel brought his death, as a poisoned arrow struck it.
Which of these episodes are not part of Ulysses' story?
crossing the Inferno
Penelope remained faithful to Ulysses all the years he had been gone and when he returned he killed all the suitors that tormented his wife's life in his absence. The episode of crossing the Inferno belongs to the legend of Aeneas, the survivor from Troy, who was considered by the Romans to be their ancestor god.
-------------------------------------------------------
Question 10:
This hero solved the riddle of the Sphinx.
Oedipus
Oedipus has probably the most tragic destiny of all the Greek heroes: he murders his father and then marries his mother...
