Today is...
Monday, Nov. 3, the 307th day of 2003 with 58 to follow.
The moon is waxing. The morning stars are Jupiter and Saturn. The evening stars are Mercury,
Mars, Venus, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
Those born on this date are under the sign of Scorpio. They include early Texas leader Stephen
Austin, for whom the state capital is named, in 1793; poet William Cullen Bryant in 1794;
former Massachusetts governor and 1986 Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis, 1933 (age 70);
comedians Roseanne and Dennis Miller, and actress Kate Capshaw, all in 1953 (age 50); and
actress Kathy Kinney ("The Drew Carey Show") in 1954 (age 49).
On this date in history:
In 1783, with American independence established, Congress ordered the Continental Army demobilized.
In 1803, with the support of the U.S. government, Panama issued a declaration of independence from Colombia.
In 1928, Mickey Mouse appeared for the first time, with Walt Disney doing the squeaky voice of his soon-to-be-famous creation, in "Steamboat Willie," first fully synchronized sound cartoon ever produced.
In 1948, the Chicago Tribune printed the premature (and incorrect) headline, "Dewey defeats Truman."
In 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first animal into space -- a dog named Laika -- aboard the Sputnik 2 spacecraft.
In 1964, Lyndon Johnson was elected president with a margin larger than in any previous presidential election, defeating Republican Barry Goldwater.
In 1976, former Democratic Gov. Jimmy Carter of Georgia was elected 39th president, defeating Republican incumbent Gerald Ford.
In 1979, five members of the Communist Workers Party, participating in a "Death to the Klan" rally in Greensboro, N.C., were shot to death by a group of Klansmen and neo-Nazis. Seven others were wounded.
In 1984, the cremation of assassinated Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi drew world leaders to New Delhi.
In 1992, Democrat Bill Clinton, the governor of Arkansas, defeated incumbent Republican President George Bush.
In 1995, Typhoon Angela killed more than 700 people in the northern Philippines.

POETRY OF THE WEEK
" WHY? "
BY: Taylor McKibbin
Age: 11
Why am I the one?
Why me?
Pick someone else!
I want friends.
I want to be liked and loved.
Why did you make me this way?
Not smarter or more prettier,
maybe nicer,
but why, why, why, why did you pick me?
I don’t want to be in a dark place!
I want to be where there are angles
Some times I sit and wait for a change,
but what do I get?
I get dragons, redness, and fire.
But suddenly I see blue skies
and the dragons turn into angles
and haloes pop upon their heads.
But still I wonder WHY, WHY, WHY?

Batter Up
Andy dislikes the catcher. Ed's sister is engaged to the second baseman. The center
fielder is taller than the right fielder. Harry and the third baseman live in the same
building. Paul and Allen each won $20 from the pitcher at pinochle. Ed and the outfielders
play poker during their free time. The pitcher's wife is the third baseman's sister.
The pitcher, catcher, and infielders except Allen, Harry, and Andy, are shorter than Sam.
Paul, Andy, and the shortstop lost $50 each at the racetrack. Paul, Harry, Bill, and the
catcher took a trouncing from the second baseman at pool. Sam is involved in a divorce
suit. The catcher and the third baseman each have two children. Ed, Paul, Jerry, the
right fielder, and the center fielder are bachelors. The others are married. The
shortstop, the third baseman, and Bill each cleaned up $100 betting on the fight.
One of the outfielders is either Mike or Andy. Jerry is taller than Bill. Mike is
