Today is...

Today is Wednesday, Aug. 27, the 239th day of 2003 with 126 to follow.

The moon is new.

The morning stars are Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. The evening stars are Mercury, Venus, Uranus, Pluto, and Neptune.

Those born on this date are under the sign of Leo.

They include English auto maker Charles Rolls (Rolls Royce) in 1877; Lyndon Baines Johnson, 36th president of the United States, in 1908; Nobel Peace Prize winner Mother Teresa in 1910; Paul Rubens (aka Pee-Wee Herman) in 1952 (age 51); and actress Sarah Chalke in 1976 (age 27).

On This Day in History:

In 1859, the first successful oil well in the United States was drilled near Titusville, Pa.

In 1883, the most powerful volcanic eruption in recorded history occurred on Krakatau, a small, uninhabited island located west of Sumatra in Indonesia.

In 1928, the Kellogg-Briand Pact, outlawing war as a means to settle international disputes, was signed by 15 nations in Paris. World War II began scarcely 11 years later.

In 1991, the Soviet republic of Moldavia declared its independence. And the European Community recognized Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as independent nations.

In 1999, two Russian cosmonauts and a French astronaut left Mir to return to Earth, leaving the orbiting Russian space station unmanned for the first time in 13 years.

ARTWORK OF THE WEEK

" Giant Mundane "

by Ben 'the Cougar' Harris
Age: 17
Owosso, Michigan

Artwork Of The Week

He's supposed to be 12ft tall, so I have to add some reference, either a human silhouette or trees or ground clutter. I will repost. He looks like a more peaceful giant than if I had drawn him super brawny. I like the ab work, that came out good.

POETRY OF THE WEEK

" Watch You Cry "

By: Michael Sylvester
Age: 16
Watford, ENGLAND

I see you cry,
The tears slide down,
Your distraught and pretty face.
The radiance usually,
Surrounding you,
Now gone but still with grace.

You tell me that,
I can't help,
And right now I would agree.
But the feeling of,
All I can do,
Is watch, is torture for me.

I wish right now,
That I could hold,
Your sorrowful body in mine.
And as I do,
The pain would go.
But that want is wasting time.

Maybe, I thought,
That I could say,
Something to make you stop.
But you left, and now,
I want to but,
Dry your tears, I can not.

So now I sit,
And wait because,
It is all that I can do.
And hope that,
Soon you find,
Some one to comfort you.

I've an idea,
Who that one might be,
And maybe, hopefully,
He'll make it ok.
But I wanted it,
For that someone to be me.
