MONEY MATTERS CENTER

Matt Knows Money

(Age: 14, Tempe, AZ) Matt has built a pretty good bank account for himself. Here's how he has been able to make a buck. He runs garage sales for your neighbors and take 10% of the sales (plus expenses). He is one of the best car washers in his neighborhood. He has washed 25 cars a week for 4 weeks @ $10 each (that's roughly four cars per day) and has earned some decent cash. Matt Didn't wait for the cars to come to him. He canvassed the neighborhood. Matt also likes to pull weeds. By the foot! Everyone who happily planted a garden in the spring is faced with weeds by mid-summer. Charge $2/foot to rid their flowers and vegetables of the pesky things. Matt also knows the rule of Buy low and Sell high. People in his neighborhood like to barbecue so Matt takes orders from them to supply them with the charcoal, paper plates, starter fluid, potato chips, etc., and then he purchases in bulk (quantity) from a discount store like CostCo or Price Club. He then charges his neighbors a higher price than he paid for the supplies. It makes their life easier, and Matts more profitable! Then there is always savings. When it's Matt's birthday and his aunts and grandparents give him a check to celebrate, Matt know how to 'Bank It.' Matt has been able to turn a couple of year's worth of Birthday Checks into his own mutual fund. At 14! Like the commercial asks, "What's In Your Wallet?"
